Pizarro Review (iPhone / iPod Touch)

Pizarro iPhone Game
8 Overall Score
Graphics: 7/10
Gameplay: 8/10
Replayability: 8/10

Simple, Intuitive Gameplay. Interesting Sound Effects and Music.

Lack of Variety.

Beware of the red dot! The Pizarro game brings all of the inventive playfulness of the arcade home to the iPhone and iPod Touch. The simple-to-use controls might only involve pressing a finger to the touchscreen at opportune times, but the strategy gets deep, and the damn elusive bouncing red ball creates an addictive interaction that can be summed up by one word: fun!

The Game
Pizarro is in part a kick-ass arcade/strategy game, because of its minimalistic simplicity. What does that mean? Well, I’ll tell you: Pizarro looks and feels like one of the late great Atari or Nintendo arcade titles (Donkey Kong anyone?) with the addition of an intuitive touchscreen. There are a myriad of timed levels of bouncing ball madness along with twelve unlockables. Pizarro is also a part of the Apple Game Center (so beat your friends’ scores and brag people!).

The Gameplay
The rules are simple; the player must press the screen for as long as they dare to raise a black circle on the white screen in order to take up eighty percent of the surface to continue on. But the red dot looms…

Whenever the player is still expanding their circles, they are susceptible to the evil red ball’s touch, which destroys them. There is an energy bar that limits the amount of presses each thumb can make and the levels are timed, so that blocking off the space without the predator-like scarlet dot ruining your surface is quite tricky.

Graphics
The design and graphics are smooth, simple and enjoyable. The swirling black and white circles expand, like bull’s-eyes, beautifully on the white screen. The energy level bar is neon green, and my arch nemesis, the red ball, is very ominous and feels a bit retro in its redness. Pizarro is like a long lost Atari arcade machine brought to the iPhone, and that is not a bad thing.

Music & Sound
Pizarro boasts a fun and bluesy soundtrack that moves, shakes, rattles and rolls with trumpets blaring each time you touch the screen. The sounds are akin to the many simple and addictive qualities that this game possesses.

Conclusion
Pizarro is a winner! Though I will admit it gets frightfully difficult to actually beat the levels and progress past the raging red dot, it is so much fun to keep trying that I must implore everyone to cough up a buck and rock their iPhones with this one!
