The Game
This game is pure, unadulterated fun. Baby Monkey pits a cute furry monkey sitting backwards on the back of a determined pig against numerous levels of pitfalls, T-Rex dinosaur skeleton roadblocks, fat “Nom Nom Hamsters” and even “Space Unicorns” (complete with space horns) poised to halt the monkey’s jumps. And this baby monkey is really, really hungry and needs to get as many bananas as are simianly possible!
The Gameplay
Baby Monkey (Going Backwards on a Pig) is amazing in that the controls feel confortable and intuitive while the fast pace of the banana-riddled side scroller keeps the action adventure challenging. Baby Monkey turns the iPhone horizontally for the player to use the touchscreen as a makeshift controller. There is a virtual button to make the monkey jump, in the lower left-hand corner, and a button to make the piggy jump in the lower right. The opening tutorials allow each big jump or each new move to be learned quickly and adeptly for any age of player (including my five year old niece, who loves this).
Graphics
The cartoon graphics are very appealing, and as the monkey collects more bananas the environments dynamically change to provide unique experiences through the mountainous levels, giant hamsters and slate colored skies. The entire visual experience is highly polished and satisfying.
Music/Sound
The sound effects are minimal, but adequate. But the music is absolutely addictive! Parry Grip has written an incredibly humorous, catchy, and memorable theme song that plays while the game goes quickly by. If there was ever a song to inspire people of all ages to ride the back of a pig and collect bananas as a baby monkey, Parry Grip’s one is it! The song was originally penned to accompany the mind-bending viral video featuring (oddly enough) a monkey riding backwards on a pig. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, this really happened!
