American Tomato is the “American Idol” of iPhone games . . . with a twist:  players throw tomatoes at the singers.

The Game

American Tomato is for two kinds of people:  those that love reality TV music programs, and those who despise them. Personally, I am in the latter camp and I love music, so this game is a refreshing form of fun.

The Gameplay

The game starts out with players choosing or creating avatars. Players can use photos of themselves to attach to their cartoon bodies.

Once your avatar is complete, you are given a choice between auditioning with either the American Tomato song or one from iTunes. The player must sing into the iPhone and watch as the levels match up with the song that plays. All the while, your avatar dances and sings onstage in front of four judges.

The audition can be recorded for later use, or as part of a fun karaoke option that opens up your entire iTunes library on the iPhone for loud, raucous antics. If the player’s singing does not compare to the actual song, then one can enter the game portion and fire as many tomatoes as is humanly possible with a touchscreen slingshot that is quite intuitive. There are many locked levels that can easily be achieved by hurling fruit at the player’s avatar repeatedly.

Art & Graphics

Though the cartoon graphics of American Tomato are not by any stretch the greatest, they are not the worst either. However, American Tomato does manage to capture the look and feel of the popular reality talent show “American Idol”, including flashy representations of the stage, crowds, and judges. The avatars are also active and animated, making the overall presentation rather pleasing to the eye.

Music & Sound

The music and sounds are of the highest quality. This is vital to the success of American Tomatoes, as the songs and the recorded singing of the players make up the entire game. Clapping, cheering, and the use of iTunes all sound great, though it would have been nice if the judges spoke with pompous voices instead of silent subtitles.

Conclusion

Overall, the American Tomatoes game is funny and entertaining for fans of reality TV music shows, or musicians themselves, but a love of music is necessary for players to get anything out of this karaoke machine of an iOS app.
